Stonefields Heritage Trail Update 1st Aug 2017

The old quarry road that was gifted by Todd Property to Auckland, is well underway to becoming the Stonefields Heritage Trail. Whilst the initial completion date was planned for July 2017, there have been a number of hurdles that have pushed this date out to potentially September 2017. From what we have heard, there were some issues with the alignment of the fencing along the undulating terrain, causing panels to be adjusted for certain angles. Additionally, rumours are that some delays are due to additional design changes which can only be a good thing for the users.

The Stonefields Heritage Trail currently under construction along the southern edge of Stonefields, Auckland, New Zealand. The trail follows an old quarry haul out road and when finished will provide stunning views across the wetlands and suburb. Music: Undeniable Video: by Brian Lomas

A recent flyover of the trail, by Stonefields Resident Brian Lomas, highlights the significant amount of work that has had to go into the project. The stairs below the shops were a significant amount of work, and as you can see from Brian's Flyover, the gradient certainly required a number of levels. However, this should allow for access to the shops, which has been a major request from the residents.

One of the most stunning features of the Heritage Trail are the significant number of Po that are being placed along the trail. These stunning features truly connect the past with the future, and the placement of some of these gives the opportunity for us to reflect on the history, meaningand the important role we all play as the new Iwi of Maungarei (Mt Wellington). We certainly look forward to hearing more about the meaning behind all of the Po along this altered landscape.

There will be an opening ceremony for the trail according to the Orakei Local Board, so watch this space an we will keep you informed as to when. Bring on Spring!
